General levels are assorted according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). Next to each level you will find some things that a typical user on that level can do.

Beginners (CEFR levels A1-A2)
You can express simple opinions in a familiar context. You can understand basic instructions. You can complete simple forms and write short letters & postcards.
Intermediate (CEFR levels B1-B2)
You can express your opinions on complex topics in a limited way. You can keep up a conversation on various topics. You can understand routine information and articles. You can write letters and e-mails on familiar matters.
Advanced (CEFR levels C1-C2)
You can express yourself accurately and effectively in most situations. You can understand academic texts on various topics. You are able to take accurate notes and write essays showing an ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
